Budapest Wizz Air Half Marathon 2022

“Berci, whatever happens, you can't stop; you have to do what we're here for.”

“Berci, whatever happens, you can't stop; you have to do what we're here for.”

This was my last sentence before the start, as we set off yesterday for the 21.1 kilometers ahead of us at the WizzAir Budapest Half Marathon. It's as if I felt something was going to happen.

For Berci, this was the main race of the year, the race for which he had prepared for months and where he finally wanted to run a half marathon under 80 minutes.

I offered my help because in recent weeks I was really just searching for myself. The training wasn't going well, I was tired mentally and physically, and I wasn't in a state of mind to finish the season with a run that I would value, so we agreed that I would help Berci's run as a pacer, so that working together, tucked behind me in the slipstream, he would really only have to focus on the goal and the running.

At the beginning of the race I fell, but fortunately the pack of 8-10 people “reacted” quickly to my fall, so I escaped without serious injury or being stepped on. Other than that, everything went according to plan; we reached the markers for 5, 10, and then 15 kilometers exactly to the second, and finally, after a small low point, the finish line.

But most importantly: Berci finished with a new personal best of 1:18:16, almost 1 minute faster than what our original goal was. It was a great experience to accompany and help him achieve his goal and the time result he had long desired.

Soon he will also share how he experienced the race from the inside, but for me, this run yesterday was also a bit of a metaphor for life.

At the beginning everything is still super, everything goes great, and then comes one (or more) obstacle, a low point. The people who are around you – as the kilometers pass – slowly fall behind, drop off, but there will also be those who overtake you. And that's okay. But no matter what happens, no matter what we find ourselves facing, we must keep our eyes on the goal until the very last meters.

Berci did this during his long 1.5-year injury and also this year during the preparation process.

And yesterday, he deservedly reaped the fruits of the invested work.
